New York City is famously one of the most popular locations in the US to work in medical billing and coding, and as a result more and more medical billing and coding schools in NYC have been springing up to educate willing participants. One of the reasons for the popularity of the medical billing and coding occupation in New York is down to how many hospitals and medical facilities there are in New York, and more specifically, the NYC area.

Medical billing and coding schools in NYC are absolutely essential so to train more and more people into this hugely important profession over the next decade or so. It goes without saying that doctors and nurses do one of the most important and respectable jobs in the US, day in day out, but it’s fair to say their jobs would be significantly harder if it wasn’t for the medical billers and coders that work behind to scenes to offload a large amount of the paperwork accrued by these doctors and nurses during a regular working day.

It’s estimated that, now in the year 2012, there are over 820,000 doctors and other medical professionals (not including nurses – the number of nurses is significantly larger) practicing in the US. This vast number professionals, many of which live and work in New York, need people behind them to act as a HR agency, which is exactly what the medical billing and coding schools in NYC are trying to produce.

How Do I know if I’ll Enjoy Medical Billing and Coding in NYC

Billing and coding in the medical field, although complicated to begin with, comes to you with practice as anything else does. In terms of your interests, if you’ve spent a large amount of time working in a spreadsheet program (such as Microsoft Excel), and you enjoy bookkeeping and everything to do with working in medicine (and making a difference in people’s lives), there’s no doubt you’ll find some value as working as a medical biller and coder.

On top of being interested in the subject matter, it’s also advisable that you’re very serious about your work and almost have an OCD tendency to do your work well and meticulously. You will also have to have a strong understanding of financial and medical terminology, but if you don’t have this already don’t worry. This will be taught to you at the medical billing and coding schools in NYC of your choice.

What is the Difference between a Medical Biller and Medical Coder

Due to the jobs often being advertised together as a single entity, in New York or elsewhere in the Unites States, it’s not uncommon for people outside of the medical field or see the job of a medical biller and medical coder as one and the same. This isn’t the case at all, though they do have to work alongside each other with the same personal, and they do possess some of the same skills (hence why the medical billing and coding schools in NYC teach the skills alongside each other). In simple terms:

A Medical Coder takes a diagnosis from the doctor on duty and forms a number from the treatment that was administered.

A Medical Biller then turn the coders number into a dollar amount, which is then billed to the patient.

It sounds complicated, but like we said earlier, you will be taught all of this in whichever of the medical billing and coding schools in NYC you choose to attend. Working as a medical biller and coder your main duties will be:

Bookkeeping

Standard administration duties

Compiling HCFA (1500) claim forms

Keeping patients informed about different insurance plan benefits

Billing insurance companies

Handling your daily billing duties

Despite the need for medical billers and coders, especially in New York City, the field itself is still highly competitive. If you want to aim for the best (and highest paid) job you can possibly find when you graduate school, be sure to take your schooling incredibly seriously, develop a meticulous attention to detail, and avoid getting pulled down by paperwork.

Why New York City?

Well, we’re bias, but we do believe NYC to be the best city in the world, not just for medical education, jobs, and facilities, but also for having the time of your live and truely enjoying the times that you’re not studying or at work!

Our bias aside, we truly believe the medical billing and coding schools in NYC are of the highest quality in the whole of the US, and, that said, the world. New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens in particular) hosts an unbelievably large amount of medical hospitals, facilities, and institutions that you can work for when you graduate, all of which are always looking for high quality (and well educated) billers and coders.

So, What are the Best Medical Billing and Coding Schools in NYC

Living in NYC you’re very lucky to have a huge number of very good medical billing and coding schools in your backyard. That said, if you’re serious about this profession, you shouldn’t be content with ‘very good’. If you ultimately want to graduate with the best job offers you can possibly get your hands on you’ll want to start with getting the best education you can.

Below we have written a short review of what are, in our opinion, some of the best medical billing and coding schools in NYC. Click the name of a particular school below to be taken straight to our review of that specific school, or continue scrolling through this article to read them all:

The Manhattan Institute

The ABC Training Center

Sanford-Brown Institute

Penn Foster Career School

York College

The Manhattan Institute

The Manhattan Institute, is often affectionately referred to, by professionals, current students, and alumni, alike as the highest quality of all the medical billing and coding schools in NYC.

A state certified vocation medical school, the MI offers a two-fold approach to education, offering both simple certifications and diploma level education alongside many other forms of medical education, working in conjunction with Allied Health Care to help you develop the skills you will need for a successful career in medical billing and coding.

Situated in midtown Manhattan, the school is easily accessible to anybody in the surrounding tri-state area, with even students from Connecticut and Eastern Pennsylvania being close enough to attend (and, they do). The Manhattan Institute earns its stripes as one of the highest quality medical billing and coding schools in NYC due to its insistence on offering day, evening, and weekend courses in not just medical billing and coding, but also EKG technician training and medical assisting.

The Manhattan Institute is famous for not only taking in foreign students on the same terms that they do students from the US, but they also play an active role in helping students getting their visa approved.

Education at the Manhattan Institute is, as it should be, the top priority for the institution. All courses provided by the MI have been certified and authorized by The Education Department to ensure the high expectations of their students are not just fulfilled, but surpassed, time and time again. Licencing on teachers and lecturers at the MI is incredibly important to this institution, which is why they insist on all teachers and lecturers being licensed by the SED (State Education Department).

The ABC Training Center

The ABC Training Center is one of the cheaper medical billing and coding schools in NYC, but for the most part the quality of education is by no means sacrificed. They provide low cost courses (in comparison to other schools in New York City).

A family-owned school, the ABC Training Center is well renowned across NYC for being the most student-focused of all the main medical billing and coding schools in NYC, with a small number of friendly staff who, far from making you jump into the world of employment yourself once you graduate, help you find the job you want.

As you would no doubt expect from a smaller school, the medical billing and coding course only costs $1,500 and lasts only ten weeks. Because the school is aware of the financial difficulties and needs of their potential students they only require you to put a $250 deposit upfront, after which you can pay off the cost of the course in single $125 weekly payments, which is significantly more generous than some of the other medical billing and coding schools in New York.

Sanford-Brown Institute

If you choose to attend the Sanford-Brown Institute you will quickly notice that the course isn’t focused specifically on medical billing and coding, but also didactic training in many different key areas including:

Medical coding with compensation programs

Abstracting data

Understanding heath care online applications

The upkeep of health records

Medical billing techniques and procedures

Watching clinical externship

Unlike the other medical billing and coding schools in NYC in this list, Sanford-Brown actually has many different medical institutes across the United States and they’ve become a famous market leader for educating and pro-actively training up new billers and coders across the country.

Sanford-Brown is set apart from many of the other medical billing and coding schools in NYC by the fact that the course curriculum is structured so students learn not just about billing and coding, but also reimbursement systems, computer applications, and health record maintenance. The idea being these are the kind of tasks that will be put in front of the student when they make the leap from student to employee in their first employed role at a medical facility in New York City.

Penn Foster Career School

Technically the Penn Foster Career School can never apply to be one of the best medical billing and coding schools in NYC, as it is in fact (if you haven’t guessed already) located in Pennsylvania. That said, the quality of education available at Penn Foster makes it easily worth of your attention, especially as it’s only a short journey away from New York.

The medical billing and coding school at Penn Foster will not only train you in the basics (and not-so-basics) in medical billing and coding, but they’ll also walk you through other medical duties which will likely crop up during your day to day work in a professional medical institution, including standard tasks such as handling bills, filing record claims and sorting through insurance forms.

York College

York College, also attributed to being one of the best medical billing and coding schools in NYC, provides certification courses for both the absolute beginner who wants to get into medical billing and coding, and the more seasoned professional who wants to improve upon what they already know (as well as their level of official certification).

That said, the courses aren’t easy, and you won’t immediately achieve certification simply by completing the courses. In the medical billing and coding module you need to score 80 percent and above in all eight courses to achieve anything.

Within the medical field, one of the top careers right now is that of an medical administrative assistant. There are currently more than 500,000 medical administrative assistant jobs in the US market. The number of medical administrative assistant jobs is expected to keep increasing by 34 percent until 2018. There are plenty of medical administrative assistant jobs out there for you to choose from, so it shouldn’t be too hard for you to find a good one with a reasonable medical administrative assistant salary to go alongside it.

The administrative medical assistant job description is quite simple. You will perform any duties set as a part of the administrative medical assistant job description by the particular doctor you work for. The administrative medical assistant job description will vary from place to place so it will really matter what the doctor you work for needs you to do at any one time.

Many medical administrative assistant jobs will be similar and have an almost identical administrative medical assistant job description. The main aspects of the administrative medical assistant job description are to be responsible for the front of house, meaning your main function in medical administrative assistant jobs will be answering phones, sitting at the reception desk and checking patients in and out of the office, taking payments, filing all paperwork, and much more. The doctor that you work for may change your administrative medical assistant job description as they see fit, which is why there is such a variance in the types of medical administrative assistant jobs out there. Each medical administrative assistant job may ask a different thing of you, so the administrative medical assistant job description is kind of hard to nail down specifically.

The medical administrative assistant salary is also interchangeable and will depend on the functions that you are asked to perform as a part of the administrative medical assistant job description. The average medical administrative assistant salary is currently $29,000 per year, or about $14 an hour. However, there are many different things you can do to increase your medical administrative assistant salary.

The type of medical administrative assistant jobs you are performing will affect the amount of your medical administrative assistant salary. The top wages for medical assistants can be found in specialized hospitals such as childrens hospitals, and in specialized doctor’s offices such as dentists. In these areas, the medical administrative assistant salary is more than $36,000 per year. Ambulatory health centers and medical labs are among the lowest paid salaries for a AMA, with these medical administrative assistant jobs paying in the $26,000 range.

Another factor that can affect the level of your medical administrative assistant salary is the city and state that you work in. The top paying states are Hawaii and Connecticut at $34,000 per year, Massachusetts at $35,000 per year, Washington, DC at $36,000 per year, and Alaska at $37,000 per year. The most medical administrative assistant jobs can be found in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Michigan. All of these states have thousands of jobs available and pay above the $30,000 per year range. The top paying cities with the highest medical administrative assistant salary are Fairbanks, AK at $41,000 per year, Barnstable Town, MA at $39,000 per year, Rochester, MN and San Francisco, CA at $38,000 per year, Peabody, MA and Salinas, CA at $37,000 per year and Napa, CA at $36,000 per year. Working in a metropolitan area such as these can raise the amount of your medical administrative assistant salary dramatically.

Another aspect that can affect the amount of your medical administrative assistant salary is your experience. The more experience you have under your belt the more types of jobs you will qualify for, and as a result the more you’ll be able to increase your medical administrative assistant salary by.

The average medical administrative assistant salary for a new graduate is about $24,000 per year. The salary amount will continue to increase as you gain more knowledge and more experience in the field. It may depend on the administrative medical assistant job description, but after ten years of working as a AMA, you will have an average salary of approximately $28,000 per year. As you work and gain more experience, you can increase this even more. By 20 years in the field, you can expect to make about $36,000 per year.

There are many things that can affect your salary as a medical assistant, but the one thing that will help you to find a really good job with a great salary above all else is gaining a certification. While this is not required in some states, it is never a bad idea to get your certification as this will show that you have been trained and educated and you know what you’re doing. It also shows that you took the time to take and pass the test, which shows a strong level of commitment on your part, showing future employers that you not only know the job, but you are dedicated to your career by taking the extra step to become certified. Medical Assistants with a certification can earn on average $5,000 more per year than a MA who is not certified.

There are many things that can affect the level of your future salary. From the place you choose to work, to the city and state that you work it. The kind of jobs you apply for are also important. The amount of experience that you have and any certifications or certificates can also affect the level of your pay. If you want to increase your pay, moving to areas with a high volume of jobs, such as California or moving to an area that has a high level of pay, like Alaska will go a long way toward increase your pay.

To become a medical assistant, you will usually need to have a certification from a recognized institution. Registration may vary from one country to another, but a medical assistant diploma is nearly always a preference. If you are interested in getting certified in the United States, you will have to follow a well-worn process. Learning this process will help you understand what you need to do in order to achieve medical assistant certification, and how it can impact your medical assistant resume.

In the United States, four major institutions are responsible for giving out medical assistant certification without a medical assistant diploma. It is important to get a medical assistant certification as a good number of employers will require you to have it before they choose to hire you. This means at the very least you will need to have passed one medical assistant certification test from any of the four major institutions. Though it is a voluntary process, it is something that the AAMA (American Association of Medical Assistants) backs up and gets behind one hundred percent.

Other institutions like the National Board of Medical Examiners, which offers a medical assistant certification test, can be used for you to gain certification. For this you will need to take the CMA Certification Examination which is offered by AAMA. To take this medical assistant certification test, you can visit any nearby computer-based testing center to apply. Please note that you cannot take the CMA (AAMA) certification examination if you haven’t done either an ABHES or CAAHEP accredited medical assisting program in the past.

Once you have successfully completed the CMA (AAMA) certification examination, you will receive your credential. You can add this credential to your medical assistant resume when you apply for jobs. It will show an employer you have a medical assistant certification, which will in turn give you a higher chance of landing the position you are looking towards getting.

To maintain your credential, you must redo the medical assistant certification test after five years. Often it is better for you if you have continued your education as it will give you a higher medical assistant certification at the end. However, if you have not continued with your studies and do not have a medical assistant diploma, you can still do the medical assistant certification test to earn a re-certification and prove your competence. Note that some organizations might have the same initials like CMA. The initials in capital letters are copyrighted and you should watch out inaccurate representations so to avoid confusion. And although they sound similar, AAMA and AMA are not part of the same organization. AMA is the American Med Association.

If you have finished your medical assistant classes, you may choose to use another credential in order to do the medical assistant certification test. This involves being a RMA (Registered Medical Assistant). Getting the credential is voluntary, but you need to have completed your medical assistant classes based on the American Medical Technologies (AMT) agency. AMT started this certification in 1972 and since then it has had its own officers, conventions, bylaws and revalidation programs.

There are two main ways a student can get the RMA. Firstly, the student needs to have completed their medical assistant classes successfully at an institution that is accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. Secondly, they need to have at least five years experience as a medical assistant. Once this medical certification test has been passed, the initials ‘RMA’ will follow your name. This can be used as a way to add value and social proof to your medical assistant resume.

In the United States, another organization that has been growing fast while offering medical assistant certification is the NHA (National Healthcareer Association). NHA has certified over 200,000 individuals in different health care professions including holders of a medical assistant diploma. It offers a medical assistant certification test that splits certification in two categories; administrative and clinical. In fact, it is the only organization that offers medical assistant certification in this way. The medical assistant certification test for administrative category is CMAA (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant) and clinical is CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant). Either certification will have a positive impact on your medical assistant resume.

A highly qualified medical assistant might want to look into another form of medical assistant certification. NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) is an organization that can test such individuals as it has incredibly stringent testing methods. It starts by checking the background of the individual, include their education. Records of missed medical assistant classes and other irregularities can be cause for disqualification. Once the candidate has been deemed fit and the have passed the test, they get a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification. NCCT was incorporated in 1989 and having its credential in a medical assistant resume can increase the chances of you being hired tenfold. Some similar organizations tend to offer medical assistant certification for life, however, NCCT uses a process where the interested party must maintain medical assistant classes with a minimum of 14 hours (continuously) on an annual basis to maintain certification.

Before any of these certifications can be given, you need to attend medical assistant classes. A candidate who has had poor medical assistant classes participation will have a higher chance of failing to get a medical assistant diploma, which in turn will give them a poor medical assistant resume due to their lack of certification. For this reason, be sure to always attend your medical assistant classes, especially if you are looking to achieve a medical assistant diploma.

A medical assistant diploma can be achieved from various institutions. Despite this, they will all have different requirements in regards to participation of the medical assistant classes offered. Those with many medical assistant classes and lab durations have a higher chance of providing an approved and recognized medical assistant diploma.

Since medical assistants are required to work under a specific health professional, their medical assistant resume needs to consist of several things. First of all, your medical assistant resume should specify your level of education. Those without a medical assistant diploma should not be discouraged to apply. As long as you passed your exams and include this in your medical assistant resume, you should be fine.

You are also encouraged to include other achievements in your medical assistant resume, such as voluntary work and exemplary performance in school.

You may be wondering what exactly is a medical technologist? To answer that question, you first need to answer the question of what is a medical technologist main job description. A medical technologist is very similar to a medical lab technician but with one slight difference. Technologists perform more intricate and involved tests than a medical lab technician is ever able too. They perform high level testing of blood, DNA, immune system testing and even bacterial testing. They will analyze the samples and cross check them for accuracy. They also use the more intricate machines like an automated analyzer, whereas a medical laboratory technician is usually taught to use simpler machinery in the beginning.

What is a medical technologist duties in the lab? In addition to testing duties they also oversee the medical laboratory technician. A medical laboratory technician will analyze body cells and fluids but they will not have the training needed to access the machines and data that a medical technologist has. This means that the technologist will perform managerial style duties and may check in on the work of a medical laboratory technician from time to time.

What is a medical technologist and medical laboratory technician education and school requirements? An entry level medical technologist will need to obtain a bachelor’s degree in medical technology. This will take about four years of college education. A certification test may also be required in some states before you can successfully obtain a job as a technologist. This test can be taken after you have graduated from an accepted program. A medical laboratory technician can get either a certificate or an associate’s degree. This will take one to two years depending on the program you choose.

What is a medical technologist salary and income potential? The average salary for a medical technologist is approximately $56,000 per year, however the salary will depend largely on how many years of experience you have, your certifications, and the area in which you work. The top paying states for medical technologists are Washington, DC at $65,000 per year, Nevada at $68,000 per year and California at $75,000 per year. Aside from that, New York, California and Texas all have the highest job potential with upwards of 10,000 jobs in each state.

As a medical laboratory technician, you can expect an average salary of about $38,000 per year. This will depend on what type of organization you work for, the state you work in, and the amount of experience that you have. The top paying states for a technician are Connecticut at $45,000 per year, Washington, DC at $48,000 per year and Rhode Island at $59,000 per year. Massachusetts, Tennessee and Georgia have the highest amount of jobs available with more than 6,000 available jobs in each state.

Where is a medical technologists main workplace? Both medical technologists and technicians primarily work in the hospital or lab sector. Though many can find jobs in doctors offices and other types of facilities, the majority of jobs are in hospital labs. More than 60% of lab workers are employed by hospitals. There are many different jobs available for both technologists and technicians but more often than not they will work in large laboratories, such as those you find in larger hospitals.

What is a medical technologist and medical laboratory technicians job outlook for the future? Currently, there are more than 164,000 jobs available for technologists and 150,000 jobs available for technicians in the US. Both of these career paths are to see expansion within the next six years. Technicians will see an expansion of 16 percent while technologists are expected to see an expansion of 12 percent in the job market. This means that not only are there currently a wide range of jobs to choose from, there are also many more jobs that are going to be added in the coming years.

How do I know which I should become? While both jobs are similar, you will need to decide if you want to endure the extra education and job requirements that is required to become a technologist. You will not only perform more intricate testing procedures, but you will also be in charge of one or more medical laboratory technicians.

You may want to first become a medical laboratory technician and learn the job before you go back to school to become a technologist. While there are requirements needed for both careers, they both offer a career with a lot of earning potential and an interesting job that will always keep you on your feet. It all comes down to how much research and training you want to undertake before you get a job.

There are many medical careers out there to choose from, but working in a medical lab can offer you unrivalled benefits such as a good salary, a stable work environment and a way to you to be constantly kept on your toes. If you are the type of person that likes to test things, analyze and diagnose problems and their solutions, and follow rules and guidelines to an intricate degree, then a job as a medical laboratory technician or technologist may be the perfect career choice for you.

There is a lot of room for advancement in the laboratory sector. You can eventually, with the right level of determination, become the manager of the lab and not only increase your abilities and responsibilities but also double (or even triple) your salary. This is a job that will always be needed and in demand. Go out there and get a step-up on your career today!

There are many different types of medical assisting careers you can go into, but the one this article is going to focus on in particular is that of a pediatric medical assistant. A pediatric medical assistant, or PMA, is an assistant to a pediatrician.

This means that they will perform any duties as needed by the pediatrician. Some of these duties will include clerical functions such as checking patients in and out of the office, making appointments, making appointment reminder phone calls, handling all of the office correspondence, mailing and faxing school forms and shot records, filing and updating medical records, and any other clerical tasks that the pediatrician needs help with.

Additionally, a PMA may also perform hands on assistance tasks for a doctor, such as taking a patient’s vital signs, recording their height, weight and other vitals in the patient’s chart, preparing the patient for an exam such as lifting them onto a table, or simply giving them a dressing gown (robe) to change into.

A pediatric medical assistant may also be asked to take fluids, as needed, for laboratory tests. They may also give vaccinations and shots to the child. A pediatric medical assistant will need to have highly developed children skills as it will be a large part of their job to calm the patient before the doctor sees to them. As you would expect, being good with children is a must for any pediatric medical assistants. They may also have to give medications to the patient or draw a patient’s blood, so they will have some experience with hands-on procedures so they know what to do with the patient in these situations.

A pediatric medical assistant job description will largely depend on the size of the office, the doctor that you work for and if you are the only medical assistant in the office. You may also be asked to assist the doctor during procedures like exams and surgeries. The doctor may need a pediatric medical assistant to perform lab tests or call the lab for the results. The doctor may also need you make sure that all instruments in the office have been sterilized and to dispose of any instruments or items that have been contaminated or that are otherwise unusable. You may also be in charge of ordering new instruments and supplies such as medical gloves and needles.

As a pediatric medical assistant, there are many different job functions that you will be expected to perform. The types of functions that you perform will depend on the doctor that you work for and also what your state allows you to perform. While you cannot dispense treatment to a patient, you can assist the doctor in their treatment of a patient. The functions that you perform will depend on what a doctor needs your help with, but in essence you are there to make sure that the office is running smoothly and everything is in proper working order.

In order to get started as a pediatric medical assistant, you will need to receive proper training and education. Most medical assistants have at least a certificate through a trade school, but many employers now are looking for medical assistants with a degree.

During your college career, you will study courses in medical transcription, anatomy, physiology, how to take specimens for the lab, clinical and diagnostic techniques and much more. All of this will get you ready for your job as a pediatric medical assistant. This process will take one to two years to complete depending on the degree plan you choose.

It’s also possible for you to choose upon graduation, to take a test to become a certified medical assistant. This not only looks great on a resume, but it will look great to any potential employers and will increase the level of your salary (and your likelihood to receive larger raises in the future). This will set you apart from other applicants who have just graduated and show that you have the experience and knowledge needed to do the job right.

As a PMA, in addition to working doing a job you love, you will also make a highly respectable salary. The average medical assistant makes approximately $28,000 per year, and working as a PMA the average pay is approximately $31,000 per year. However, the amount that you make will depend on several factors such as the area you work in and the particular institution you’re employed by. Alaska, Washington DC, and Massachusetts all average more than $35,000 per year.

Another factor that will affect your salary is how much experience you have in the field. After ten years of experience you can expect a salary of $34,000 per year and by 20 years of experience you can expect an average salary of $38,000 per year. Working for a large doctors office as opposed to a small doctors office may also have a higher rate of pay than the approximate average.

Certification is important, and often overlooked. Although it is not required it will put you at the forefront of other applicants and show that you know exactly what you are doing and exactly what you need to get a job in this popular field. This determination will show through, and employers will love you for it.

A career as a pediatric medical assistant is not something to be taken on lightly. It allows you to be a part of all aspects of a child’s care, therefore it is vital that you have the skills and training (and the love) to work with children. You will need to have a high level of patience and empathy, you will have to understand what may hurt a child, you will have to be able to calm and help a child to keep still and much, much more.

This is a perfect job for someone who loves children and wants to engage in helping them in any way they can. This career gives you the chance to work with children and ensure that they are getting the proper medical care that they need in order to maintain their health in the most crucial years of their lives. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, then a career as a PMA is for you.
